Understanding delivery error messages

What is a delivery error message?

When a message cannot be delivered to its recipient, the sender receives an error message indicating the cause of the problem. These messages are called "bounce e-mail", "delivery error" or "non-delivery" messages, and are usually abbreviated to NDR (Non Delivery Service).

The content of these messages may vary depending on the sender, and their presentation may vary depending on the client software used. The message generally includes information to help identify the problem: information on the original message concerned (recipient, subject, etc.), the server that returned the problem, an error code, often accompanied by a brief explanatory message, etc.

BlueMind's mail client makes every effort to interpret error messages received in order to provide the user with the clearest possible information about the problem encountered, so that he or she can correct the message if necessary to ensure that it reaches its intended recipient:

The most common error messages

Error messages can be of several types:

  • sent by the sending server: the sender's server was unable to send the message
  • sent by the receiving server: the message has been sent, the receiving server has received it but has been unable to deliver it
